A farmer’s guide to organic fruit and vegetable production Organic Eprints
Little, Tony; Frost, David.
This guide is aimed at farmers who are considering diversification into horticulture. It assumes a sound and system-based understanding of agricultural systems, but limited knowledge of fruit and vegetable production. It gives a general introduction on organic systems and soil fertility components including factors and examples of successful crop rotation. For the main pests and diseases simple and system-based measures are highlighted, as e.g. considering the right timing of control measures, crop rotations and tillage. For weed management weeding machinery is briefly explained. Basic questions on how to choose the right variety and the equipment for weeding, harvest, and storage are discussed. Additionally, the guide gives a rough overview and...

Aerated compost tea (ACT) to improve soil biology and to act as a biofertiliser/biofungicide Organic Eprints
Amos, Dominic.
There is a growing body of evidence supporting the benefits of aerated compost tea (ACT) application, but not all studies have shown this conclusively. Compost tea application helps build healthy soils which can lead to benefits for the crop including improved crop health and nutrition, improved crop quality, as well as growth promotion and plant protection through pathogen suppression. Additionally ACT may also help crops cope better with abiotic stress factors such as drought. Practical recommendation • Exact methods of composting and compost tea making (aerobic vs anaerobic) are open to debate, but this practice abstract will focus on the method for producing aerobic compost tea. • The most important step is to produce mature, well aerated compost...

Are we mining the soil ? Organic Eprints
Bliss, Katie; Davies, Olivia; Smith, Laurence; Mullender, Samantha.
Seven organic farms took the opportunity to look at one or more of their fields. They gained insights into their rotations and NDICEA seems to be a useful tool for assessing nitrogen supply/losses throughout a rotation. The results on the farms indicate that there is a danger of losing nitrogen even in organic rotations. In the video, the researcher summarises the results and one of farmers taking part shares his thoughts. The common conclusions are that spring ley cultivation and strategic use of organic fertilisers are possible strategies for improving nutrient balances in organic farming. 'Flying livestock' and innovative strategies to keep the soil covered (e.g. living mulches, undersowing) may also help.

Assessing soil structure with two simple methods : Spade Test and mini 3D soil profile Organic Eprints
Institut du Végétal (technical Institute), Arvalis.
The spade test and the mini 3D soil profile are diagnosis tools to assess soil structure. Both tools are a simplified version of the soil profile diagnosis method that quickly provides information to the user and helps for decision making (e.g. tillage operations). The spade test only requires a spade and a tarp whereas the midi soil profile requires a telescopic loader with a pallet fork. The video presents the two different tools and their related guideline document. The leaflets explain how to extract a soil block and interpret the observed soil structure. Both leaflets contain an interpretation table for scoring the soil structure based on the observation of the clods. The tools are applicable both for organic agriculture and conventional agriculture...

Atlas of agricultural entomology - a knowledge base of pest insects Organic Eprints
It is an atlas of insects and mites relevant in agriculture (as pest or as predators or other). It allows to search by picture of the order and by common name (in Italian). Each insect is described together with the damage it may cause, its biological cycle and the tools to keep it under control, being them ecological, agronomic or direct and in the last case including active substances allowed in conventional and in organic. It may be used to identify an insect that a farmer finds in its crops and to have a first information on the causes of its presence and how to manage it. This tool provide very good pictures of insects so it can be used with a really practical approach. This can be used to develop a strategy for control.

Autumn cover crops Organic Eprints
Bortolussi, Stefano.
Best results were reached with cereal mixtures that were produced on farm, such as barley and rye. Practical recommendations Observations and hints • In Northern Italy, a mixture of barley and rye fits best in a wide range of situations. • Sow as soon as possible after harvesting the summer crops. • If the soil is not clean enough, a shallow soil labour can be applied. Otherwise, direct sowing is preferred. • Including legumes in the mixture, such as vetch and/or faba beans, has been shown to be advantageous when the cover crop is sown in early September or October, and the succeeding crop is sown at the end of May. • In case of early sowing by end of August, a cover crop consisting of only white mustard showed good results, especially in its...

Black-grass control in winter cereals with hoeing Organic Eprints
Dierauer, Hansueli; Siegrist, Franziska; Weidmann, Gilles.
Thanks to the use of the bladed hoe, strong-rooting grass weeds can be successfully uprooted even in heavier soils. Other problem weeds, such as cow vetch, hemp-nettle, windgrass, or burdock, can also be controlled with the bladed hoe. • Sow the winter cereal in October, in rows with spacing of at least 20 cm. • When the cereal is at the 3-leaf-stage, control sprouting weeds with 1-2 harrowing procedures. • After using the harrow and as the winter cereals begin tillering, root out the yet intact, well-rooted grass weed between the rows with help of a duckfoot-bladed hoeing device. The duckfoot bladed hoe may also be used in combination with the harrow.

Calculate the risk of wireworm infestation in the field Organic Eprints
Dierauer, Hansueli; Weidmann, Gilles; Siegrist, Franziska.
• In spring, with a soil temperature of at least 8 °C, place a pot full of cereal or maize grains into water and allow it soak for 24 hours. • Spread out the soaked grains on about 20 cardboard or plastic plates, pot traps, stockings with adequate mesh size or similar materials. Sealable containers must have several holes; through which the worms can access the trap. • Position the traps at a depth of 10 cm with at least 10 to 15 traps per field. The more traps per ha, the more reliable the results. Cover the traps with earth to soil-level and mark the locations. • After 7 to 10 days, dig out the traps, collect them and count the wireworms. • If one or more wireworms per trap is found, the field is infested quite strongly: economic losses are to be...

Camera-controlled hoeing of row crops Organic Eprints
Bortolussi, Stefano.
The distance of the operating tools from the middle of the row is reduced to as little as 2.5 cm at a working speed of 6-7 km/h (when the crop is in early development stage). Practical recommendations Observations and practical hints • The earlier the better: hoeing should be performed as soon as the row is visible. • The more developed the crop is, the larger the distance between the hoeing sweeps and the centre of the row should be. • In crusty soils, the working speed should be reduced during the early development stage of the crop to decrease the risk of uprooting the crop.
